| Students Exploring Marriage (SEM),
a charity that brings together young people and married
couples, has announced that it is to hold local conferences
in Salisbury Schools this summer.
Established
in 1996, Students Exploring Marriage enables young people
between the ages of 14 – 21, to explore the reality
of marriage in today’s society.
Half day conferences are to be held at St Edmunds and
Bishop Wordsworth schools and a series of PSHE workshops
at Wyvern College, in July. Students will be able to
explore their hopes and fears about getting married
and having a family. Such matters are explored in small
groups, with visiting married couples, using a workshop
format.
SEM is constantly looking for volunteer couples in
order to provide a wide range of experiences for students
to learn from. Young people have the opportunity to
meet with three different couples throughout the learning
experience.
Over the last eight years, SEM has brought together
thousands of young people and married couples in schools,
colleges and Young Offender Institutions.
“Marriage plays an important role in society.
Young people rarely get the opportunity to talk to adults
about day to day aspects of marriage, as well as its
relevance to the wider community” comments Rex
Chester, Founder and Chairman of SEM.
“Because of this, volunteer couples really are
the essence of what we do. Our aim is to enable young
people to gain a deeper understanding of commitment
and marriage. Married couples provide a living example
of this” he adds.
