Cowdray Estate offers safe shooting for children
22nd March 2005
Clay pigeon shooting is one of the UK’s fastest growing sports. But how do you ensure that your child earns the discipline, responsibility and common sense to handle a shotgun safely?

The answer is to learn to shoot safely and securely with proper instruction from a qualified shooting coach. “Clay pigeon shooting can be a safe and rewarding hobby for young people. The best place to start is with a shooting lesson at Cowdray Park, under the watchful eye of a qualified instructor” says Darron Carver, Cowdray Shooting Club.

The Cowdray Park Shooting School has just launched a scheme for complete novices with emphasis on offering professional instruction, gun handling, firearms legislation and safety. This provides the opportunity for young people to experience the renowned, traditional sport in a safe and stimulating environment.

Lessons start from £50 for an hour, with cartridges and equipment supplied.
Robert Sample, aged 8, was taught by Cowdray Park coach Darron Carver. Robert said “Darren was really good. He taught me about how to handle a gun safely, how the cartridges work, and how to point the gun at the target. I shot a left to right target and then a going away target with a twenty-bore, over and under shotgun. I was able to smash the clay pigeons from the start, which was really wicked.
“What I liked about it was that there was only a little bit of talking, it was a short lesson, and then I was allowed to shoot. Darron also helped me to learn which was my dominant eye and how to mount the gun properly so I didn’t bruise my shoulder.”

Darren says: “It can be a really fun sport to get into. It doesn’t matter if you’re 8 or 80, as long as you handle the gun responsibly and get the right tuition, you can really enjoy it.”
